    The Meadows School
    Debate Tournament
    October 12-14 2007

You are cordially invited to The Meadows School’s Fifth Annual Debate Tournament, October 12-14th, 2007. We will provide competition in Varsity Policy and Lincoln Douglas debate on the 2007 and September/October topics. For Policy this is Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its public health assistance to sub Saharan Africa. For LD this is Resolved: A just society ought not use the death penalty as a form of punishment. Our tournament has been designated as a qualifier for the Tournament of Champions at the Finals level in both divisions.

    THE TOURNAMENT:

There is no entry deadline or entry limit. We will accept entries until we are full. We can accommodate up to approximately 40 teams and 40 LDers. Teams who attended our previous tournaments were pleased with our hospitality and style, and we hope to provide the same for all interested schools. Last year’s tournament champion in policy was Kathy Bowen and Jordan Molliver from the Gulliver Prep School, and in Lincoln Douglas the champion was Jeffery Shoung of Alhambra High School. Our Championship Belts are designed and produced by Ringside.com.

Entry MUST be by Email to timalderete@yahoo.com. Faxed and mailed entries often get lost. Please DO NOT attempt to enter by phone, notes at tournaments or with students. Confirmations will be returned to all entrants with final information, transportation directions and instructions for Final Confirmation. In exchange for appropriate registration fees, packets will be distributed on Friday, October 12th at the Meadows School.

Both Divisions will consist of six preliminary debates. We will break to Octafinals. Power matching will be based on High Low Points, Opponents Wins, Total Points and Judge Variance. We will never lag pair. We will never flip on stage for elimination rounds. Up to 16 teams/debaters with winning records will advance – we will never artificially limit octofinals. We will always release copies of pairings.

    FEES:

Fees for the tournament are $80 per policy team or $40 per Lincoln Douglas debater. Lunch on Saturday and Sunday and evening activities will be included. In years past, we have taken students and judges to lunch at the Sun Coast Buffet, The Forum Shoppes at Caesar’s Palace, bowling at the Sunset Station, and to a World Class Frisbee Golf course.

One judge is required for every one or two teams, or for every Three LDers. Half of six is four. All judges are committed one round beyond their school’s elimination. A limited number of hired judges will be available for $200 each. Please contact us ASAP if you need hired judges. All Judges will be required to have a judging philosophy sheet available on http://judgephilosophies.wikispaces.com/ We would ask that coaches who attend the tournament make themselves available to judge a minimum number of rounds, to ensure the quality and maturity of the judging pool.

    LODGING:
We have secured a group rate of $85.00 at The Santa Fe Station, which serves as the tournament casino/hotel. Please contact the reservations desk at (702) 221-6605 or (866) 767-7771 and ask for the Meadows School Debate Group rate. Please make reservations soon, as last year the block of rooms did fill up long before the tournament. The Santa Fe Station is a full service hotel and casino, with a number of restaurants, buffets, a movie theatre and 24 hour bowling on site. More information can be viewed at http://www.stationcasinos.com/templates/corphome.asp

We do not provide housing at The Meadows Tournament, due to the burdens it would place upon our parents who are already contributing so much. Please DO NOT have students arrange to stay with Meadows students. If lodging is an obstacle to attending the tournament, please contact us.

The Meadows School is located on the Northwest side of Las Vegas, at 8601 Scholar Lane. To reach the Santa Fe Station from the airport, take the 215 West exit from the airport for about a mile to 15 North (there are signs for both starting at the airport). Take 15 North past the Strip to 95 North. Take 95 North (to Reno) to the Second Rancho Exit (do NOT take the Rancho exit immediately after exiting 15.) To get to The Meadows School from the hotel, take 95 South to the Lake Mead exit. Go West on Lake Mead. Turn Left on Scholar Lane (If you hit Rampart, you have gone too far) and follow it around as it curves toward the West. The school will be on the Left.
